Job Description Summary

               

Provides support and oversight of all Environment, Health, & Safety (EHS) functions for multiple food manufacturing, distribution, and office locations. Leads and/or participates in the development and rollout of EHS management system, EHS Pillar, and corporate initiatives. Builds capabilities of facility resources and mentors EHS staff. Reports to the Director, EHS. Implements key initiatives of the EHS function by working through the various plant managers and their department leadership teams. Provides 1:1 mentorship to site EHS leaders and occupational health nurses to ensure a safe work environment and engaged employees.

Job Description

  • Provide coaching, guidance, and mentorship to EHS Staff (with special focus on direct reports) to build capabilities and ensure effective execution of EHS initiatives.
  • Support the EHS pillar and corporate initiatives, aligning them with organizational objectives and driving for continuous improvement. Provide coaching and guidance on integrating the EHS pillar into daily operations to achieve an interdependent culture that protects people and the environment.
  • Stay abreast of regulatory changes and industry best practices. Provide EHS leadership and assistance to facilities to comply with all applicable EHS regulations and established standards.  Ensure EHS compliance tasks are managed promptly within our EHS information management system.
  •  Bridge communications with regulatory agencies; providing coaching, guidance, and including internal counsel when appropriate (e.g., inspections, conference committees, SME, etc.).
  • Ensure that EHS facility teams are leading in the active engagement of all employees in EHS related activities. Train and coach EHS professionals and employees in engagement activities, integrating EHS goals into day-to-day operations, fostering an interdependent culture at each facility.
  • Provide leadership toward identifying, prioritizing, and mitigating hazards to reduce risk. 
  • Lead assurance efforts to include support for the internal or external audits and assessments and drive plant self-assessments to ensure monitoring and measuring performance.
  • Ensure that EHS professionals are included in and providing EHS guidance in plant early management design and review processes.
  • Ensure management of change processes are robust at each facility to reduce risk as new materials, processes, or procedures are introduced that may represent a new or previously unrecognized hazard.
  • Provide leadership to ensure plants have adequately identified hazards and subsequent emergency response action and response plans.  Support training efforts of responders.
  • Provide oversight of incident management efforts and conduct periodic health checks in operations facilities.
  • Facilitate effective root cause analysis training (including TapRooT) of plant EHS and operations leaders; ensure timely reporting and analysis of incidents; ensure corrective and preventative actions (CAPA) are developed, shared, and tracked to completion.
  • Monitor and analyze EHS metrics and data as related to facility specific losses to identify areas for improvement. Ensure loss related action plans are included in facility master plans.
  • Ensure E/HS Managers are effectively supporting and mentoring their direct reports and interns and participate in recruiting efforts.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to the EHS Director(s) on the status of EHS initiatives, challenges, and achievements at each plant location.

Basic & Preferred Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety or environment or closely related field
  • 5 years of experience in safety and/or environment leadership roles, preferably over multiple locations, in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of EHS leadership functions and trainings, root cause investigation, EHS regulatory compliance and inspections, environmental permitting (air and wastewater).
  • Working knowledge of EPA, OSHA, and worker's compensation laws.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills. Demonstrated experience in coaching, mentoring, and developing team members while motivating leaders.
  • Frequent travel up to 50% domestically, with infrequent travel to international locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree in safety or environment or closely related field
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Environmental Manager, or Professional Engineer
  • 10+ years of experience in safety and environment leadership roles, preferably over multiple locations, in a manufacturing environment. 
  • Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 or ISO risk-based management systems preferred

This compensation is specific to this position and takes into account a number of variables. Actual compensation may be higher or lower in the range posted based on various factors, including, but not limited to, job duties, experience and expertise. A candidate’s work location could also impact the actual compensation being outside of the range to reflect local cost of labor. A reasonable annual estimate of the range for this role based on the variables previously mentioned is: $113,930.00 - $170,900.00
